The most importance difference which maps onto nice/mean is value generative versus value extractive. Am I adding value or merely moving value. A society of mover dominance disincentivises generation, which leads to poverty. The viscerality to "assholes" in dating is that it implies women merely care about value, not generation at best or at worst appreciate moving over generating.

Rather useless article because it doesn't address the prevalence or ratios of (dis)agreeable-ness in terms of group survival or cultural cohesion. You kind of barely, obliquely address the game theory, but don't go on to talk about selection pressures in a given environment and how equlibria/baselines are set to attract or repel various neurotypes – which, after enough biological iterations, is encoded through pleiotropy and/or polygenetic inheritance.

There's also the question individual psychological tradeoffs for a person placed into an an environment that doesn't math their preferred/habituated approach(es).

Is your thinking that disagreeableness is inidividually advantageous, but bad on a group level, or the opposite?

There is never one answer to these things.

Disagreeability is advantageous, for example, where the costs of maintaining consensus outweigh the costs of identifying disruptive patterns (e.g., pursuing resource acquisition in a resource-poor environment)

Disagreeability is disadvantageous, for example, where maintaining social reputation over time provides benefits that matter more than pursuing aims that are otherwise self-aggrandizing (e.g., participating in rituals that emotionally bind a community together).

There's also the fact that, psychometrically, trait agreeableness is split into politeness and compassion.

Having high politeness + low compassion (usually indicates a politically conservative temperament) is qualitatively different than low politeness + high compassion (usually indicates a politically progressive temperament).

Both of those configurations are 'disagreeable' in different ways.

Those last three paragraphs threw me for a whoop.

I think people do truly have strong and different preferences for whether they prefer disdain or the demure. The fact that active pursuit is a general win factor, doesn't discount the presence of a different gender dimorphic variable of sensitivity against perceived hurt.
